Patiala State and its history.

Patiala State and its history.

Punjab map before 1839

The state of Patiala was established by Baba Ala Singh in 1763 AD. Baba Ala Sidhu was a Jatt Sardar. He laid the foundation stone of Patiala Fort, known as Fort Mubarak, around which the present city of Patiala is built. After the third battle of Panipat in 1761 in which the Marathas were defeated by the Afghans, the writ of the Afghans prevailed throughout the Punjab.

This is the stage when the rulers of Patiala started receiving royalties. The state of Patiala witnessed more than forty years of continuous power struggle with the Afghan Durrani Empire, the Maratha Empire and the Sikh Empire of Lahore. In 1808, the Raja of Patiala made a treaty with the British in 1808 against Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the Sikh ruler of Lahore, and thus became an ally in the process of building a vast empire by the British in the Indian subcontinent. Patiala became a salute state of 17 guns during the British rule.

The rulers of Patiala, such as Karam Singh, Narinder Singh, Mahinder Singh, Rajinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh, and Yadvinder Singh, were treated with respect and dignity by the British.

Maharaja Karam Singh who ruled from 1813 to 1845 (Patial of the Sikh state in the Punjab) joined the British East India Company and helped the British during the First Anglo Sikh Wars against Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Sikh Empire which was large and From Tibet to Kashmir, near the Afghanistan border are the plains of Punjab from Peshawar.
